Maureen E. Feeney Elected as President of Boston City Council

Feeney Becomes Only Second Woman to Lead Body,
Identifies Public Safety, Education as Priorities

Boston--In a unanimous vote this morning, the Boston City Council elected Councillor Maureen E. Feeney as its president, a post which makes her only the second woman to lead the body.

"It is an honor and privilege to lead the Boston City Council," Feeney said. "I very much look forward to working with my colleagues and Mayor Menino to make continued improvements to the quality of life for all residents of the city of Boston."

Feeney identified public safety and education as critical issues which the council will focus on under her leadership. "In 2007, we must find creative and effective ways to stop the rising violence in many of our neighborhoods and to better serve our city's children with improvements to public education," she said.

Feeney has served as a Boston City Councillor since 1993, representing her constituents in district three which includes most of the neighborhood of Dorchester. Feeney signaled this November that she would seek reelection to an eighth term as Boston City Councillor this year.
